England's Head Coach Asserts Best Players Do Not Necessarily Form the Strongest Squad
The England manager declared that putting together the most talented footballers does not guarantee building the best squad dynamic. Tuchel suggested that even if the Real Madrid midfielder were fully fit after his shoulder injury, he might still have been omitted from the latest national team selection.
Focus on Team Spirit
England's head coach also indicated that the Arsenal winger's recall might not have occurred if his teammate the injured winger remained fit. The coach has put significant emphasis on team cohesion with his choices for the forthcoming Wales friendly and World Cup qualifier against Latvia.
"We're building the best team," said the England boss, who questioned the traditional thinking that championship teams typically choose their top forwards.
Previous Results
Tuchel pointed to the positive energy during last month's international break when England defeated Andorra and excelled against the Serbian team in Bellingham's absence. He saw little justification to alter the group dynamic which delivered such positive results.
- Bellingham left out even though club comeback
- Foden not included despite resurgence
- Jack Grealish also was excluded
Fitness Considerations
Although the manager partly explained Bellingham's exclusion due to physical condition, he acknowledged that the player wanted to be included during their conversation. Tuchel had previously said sorry to the midfielder for remarks regarding his playing conduct.
"Would you agree that behavior from substitutes, support from training, and squad unity allows the first team to play to their potential?" he questioned.
Team Choices Explained
Tuchel emphasized that his decisions weren't individual targeting specific individuals but instead recognized those who had performed during the previous international break.
"What would be justify to leave them out and still be credible in my words?" Tuchel asked.
Injury Enforced Changes
The only change to the squad proved necessary with the unfit Madueke making way for the returning Bukayo Saka. Tuchel clarified that even Saka might have missed out had Madueke stayed healthy.
Additional omissions featured Chelsea's attacking midfielder, who remains to struggle with fitness issues. Given just two additional gatherings prior to the tournament, opportunities are diminishing for some players to prove themselves.
Tournament Timing Issues
The manager revealed his desire for England's World Cup games to begin at later times due to heat concerns in North America. Tuchel recognized this might cause watching problems for English fans but insisted player welfare remains the priority.
"I understand the fans won't be happy but for the team it's preferable if we play later," he stated. "The players make the sport and we have safeguard them."
