Major Online Failure Impacts Dozens Sites and Mobile Apps

A large-scale internet failure has impacted many websites and apps worldwide, with users experiencing issues accessing the internet after problems at Amazon’s cloud computing service.

The impacted apps include the social media app Snapchat, the gaming platform Roblox, the messaging service Signal, and Duolingo, in addition to several Amazon-owned services such as its primary shopping platform and the Ring security doorbell company.

In the UK, the financial institution Lloyds was disrupted along with its affiliates Halifax and the Scottish bank, with also reports of problems using the the tax authority online portal on the start of the week. Also in the UK, multiple Ring device owners took to online platforms to report their doorbells were failing.

In the UK alone, reports of issues on specific platforms ran into the many thousands for every service.

The company stated that the problem began in the Atlantic coast of the US at Amazon Web Services, a section that provides essential internet framework for numerous firms, who utilize capacity on Amazon servers. Amazon Web Services is the most extensive cloud computing system.

Soon after late night (PDT) in the United States (morning UK time), Amazon confirmed “increased problem frequencies and delays” for AWS services in a region on the Atlantic seaboard of the America. The widespread consequence appeared to disrupt apps worldwide, and the problem monitoring service showing outages with the corresponding services in different parts of the world.

The outage tracker Thousand Eyes, a service that tracks online failures, further indicated a increase in problems on the start of the week, and numerous instances located in the Virginia area, the region of Amazon’s US-East-1 region where AWS said the problems originated.
