Teenager Found Deceased After False Accusations of Stealing Cremated Remains
A 14-year-old boy was found dead only a few days after being falsely accused of taking the ashes of a deceased infant during a burglary, an inquest has heard.
Tragic Discovery
Kai Lloyd's mother and father found his body in his bedroom at his Flintshire home on 19 November 2021.
False Accusations Begin
The inquest heard how his mother received a communication on November 8th, 2021 via online platforms, from a individual asking if her son was her offspring. The communication stated: "Tell him thanks for breaking into my flat."
In a statement read to the proceedings, the mother said the individual had been in the media, asserting her baby's ashes had been taken in a burglary - a allegation which was false.
Police Inquiry
An official inquiry from authorities later concluded the alleged break-in victim had "provided false information" and "evidence shows that said items was never taken in the first place".
News coverage about the alleged stolen remains attracted social media responses, and although the teenager was not identified in the messages, his parent said people "knew it was him".
The "social media content were really upsetting", she stated.
Emotional Wellbeing Impact
She explained that her son had been diagnosed with moderate attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and as part of that disorder, other peoples' views genuinely mattered to him.
"This must have affected him severely," she said, "particularly when this was untrue".
The teenager was arrested at his residence, but nothing was discovered. He was transported to a law enforcement facility and later freed under investigation.
Authorities said they would be in touch, the inquest learned, but had failed to contacted the relatives by the time of his death.
Withdrawal and Worry
His mother said her son "withdrew into himself" after the arrest and "would keep asking me whether I had heard anything from the authorities", because his condition meant sometimes "certain periods could seem like much longer".
When she spoke to him about the alleged incident, she said her child told her he had entered the residence because the woman who resided there had said he could use the toilet whenever he needed, but refuted taking anything.
Online Harassment
In a joint statement between her and her spouse, the mother said her child was being bullied digitally after the allegations.
The proceedings heard that a 19-year-old encouraged the teenager to kill himself.
She had no worries on the night before he passed away, explaining how she had heard him "laughing and joking".
She portrayed him as a "caring, affectionate" boy, and said her "family is completely shattered".
He had been "obviously hiding his worries", she stated, noting that he could not stand to have anybody "have negative thoughts of him".
Educational Reaction
The hearing heard from school personnel at Connah's Quay High School.
On 8 November, she "heard some students talking that Kai had been arrested and that was the initial I learned".
"He informed me... he'd was innocent," she continued.
After the discussion, the staff member said she called Kai's parents' landline and provided a voicemail saying she had communicated to Kai about the allegations.
The proceedings learned his parents said they did not got that communication.
Official Conclusion
Senior coroner told the inquest he would wait for documents regarding what improvements had been made to dealing with individuals with ADHD, before determining whether he should make a prevention of future fatalities report.
Providing a descriptive finding, he said: "Approximately 8 November 2021, unsubstantiated accusations were made against the teenager, a 14-year-old child.
"Likely falsehoods were subsequently exaggerated and amplified through the platform of online networks.
"During 11 November, he was interviewed by the authorities and after his interview he was freed while investigations continued."
The official determined: "Exists no evidence that the actions or omissions of any agency caused or contributed to his death and although it was the result of a personal act it is not possible to determine his purpose."
