The Tooth Fairy Story Review: Animated Journey with a Touch of Kid-Appropriate Tween Romance
In this animated adventure aimed at tweens, the fairy community focuses on gathering baby teeth of slumbering children and placing treasure under their pillows. Skateboarding teenage rebel fairy Van (voiced by Booboo Stewart) shows little enthusiasm about spending his future to collecting baby teeth—a sentiment that’s entirely reasonable. He’s only slightly more interested in the underlying economics behind it all: the fairies deliver the teeth to unseen goblins, who supply gold as payment. But Van’s curiosity grows when he spots a goblin (voiced by Larkin Bell), who turns out to be far from the ugly gnome he expected.
An Unlikely Connection and Common Enemy
The stage is set for an adventure with a gentle touch of young love (though it’s perfectly appropriate for younger kids). The fairy and goblin communities are estranged from each other, and there’s nothing like the excitement of secrecy to unite beings as one. The two species as seen here are remarkably alike, yet each holds prejudiced beliefs about the other. The fairies are said to be self-centered types, given to taking anything they want, while goblins are allegedly dim-witted, foul-smelling, and primitive, but are actually intelligent and technologically advanced.
Of course, this scenario requires a shared foe to unite against, and that need is met in the form of some nasty spiders, with voices by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. They make no secret about their intentions: they aim to devour the goblins and fairies, and they serve as quite savage, though not especially competent, villains.
Target Audience and Final Thoughts
There aren’t very many animated films aimed at the viewer group that is starting to experience first crushes, but aren’t yet mature enough for whatever teenagers view these days in lieu of popular teen sagas. If your child falls into this age group, it probably won’t to become their new all-time fave, but it’s a decent choice.
The Tooth Fairy Story releases in Scottish cinemas from 10 October and across the United Kingdom from 24 October.
